NoteCARDS: v Pirates ... after 8 innings

Top of 8th: Denny Bautista gave up another walk, this time to Ryan, and after Schumaker lined out to short, Ludwick hit a pop fly out to Nate McClouth in center field. Pujols looked for a pitch to drive in the two-out situation and a runner on first, but got behind in the count and hit a squibber out in front of the plate, Bautista pouncing on it for the third out.

Bottom of 8th: Tony La Russa called upon the rookie, lefthander Jaime Garcia, to make his first major league appearance out of the bullpen. Garcia, just turned 22 years old, from Mexico, had a rough start in his last minor league start against the Omaha Royals. Ryan Doumit initiated Garcia with a basehit to left. Up 6-0, there was a lot of leeway for Garcia to get his spikes wet, so to speak. Garcia recorded his first strikeout against Jason Bay, Molina holding onto a foul tip on the third strike. Xavier Nady took his turn against the rookie, breaking his bat on a weak pop out to Garcia for the second out. Garcia then got Adam LaRoche to fly out to right fielder Ryan Ludwick, and the rookie secured the scoreless inning on in his major league debut.

The Cardinals continued to lead 6-0 after eight complete innings.

There will be no more NoteCARDS posts on this game unless there are extra innings.
