MiLB Cardinals ... Johnson City up 3-1 in suspended game

St. Louis Cardinals' rookie league affiliate Johnson City Cardinals played host to the Elizabethton Twins today at Howard Johnson Field.

Johnson City jumped out to a one-run lead in the first inning, Guillermo Toribio hitting a leadoff single, advancing to second on a Nico Vasquez single, advancing to third on a passed ball, then scoring when Curt Smith grounded out.

Starting pitcher Deryk Hooker held the Twins scoreless through four innings, allowing only one hit, walking two and striking out six.

Two bases-loaded walks in the fourth gave increased the JC lead at 3-0, the Cards accepting the free RBIs each, Jarred Bogany and Toribio.

Jose Mateo relieved Hooker to start the fifth inning. The Twins grabbed a couple quick singles, then got some help from JC with a passed ball, a Mateo walk, and a fielding error. The next Twins' hitter grounded out, but they scored a run on the play, denting the three-run lead.

With Johnson City ahead 3-1, the game was suspended due to rain, and is scheduled for continuation on July 20.
