MiLB Cardinals ... Palm Beach loses in extra innings

St. Louis Cardinals' Single-A affiliate Palm Beach Cardinals hosted the Lakeland Flying Tigers today at Roger Dean Stadium.

The Flying Tigers nicked starting pitcher Mark Diapoules in the first inning after he gave up a single, then a triple.

Palm Beach answered and took the lead on a two-run homer by Charles Kingrey.

Back came the Flying Tigers again in the second, tying the game when first baseman Matthew Arburr erred on a pickoff throw, a FT base runner advancing to second, then scoring on a single up the middle.

With the score tied at 2-apiece, PB retook the lead at 3-2 after Daryl Jones tripled, then scored on a sac-fly by Daniel Descalso.

Palm Beach added two more in the fourth with a two-out rally. Dan Nelson walked. Brian Cartie then singled, the FT center fielder erring, allowing both PB base runners to advance to second and third. Desalso tripled them home to make it 5-3.

The Cards brought in Davis Bilardello in relief of Diapoules to start the eighth inning. Bilardello secured a ground out, but then gave up a triple. The base runner scored on the next batter's ground out, pulling the Flying Tigers within one at 5-4. After a single and a walk, Bilardello got the hook, Francisco Samuel coming in to strike out the next batter and end the rally.

Palm Beach wasted a leadoff double by Tony Cruz in the bottom of the eighth, then wished they would've made more of it after the Flying Tigers' ninth, when Samuel walked in the tying run.

The Cards failed to score in their half of the ninth, and the game headed into extra innings.

Kenneth Maiques relieved Samuel to start the tenth inning, but the first Lakeland batter tripled into deep center field. The next batter singled home the run, and the Flying Tigers led for the first time in the game, 6-5.

Down a run in the tenth, Palm Beach failed to score, going down in order.
Attendance at Roger Dean Stadium was 660.
