MiLB ... JC Cardinals edge Twins on Martinez basehit

Johnson City Cardinals (High-A): Won 3-2 at Howard Johnson Field in Tennessee yesterday against the Elizabethon Twins.

Samuel Freeman (2-1, 3.86) earned his second win after coming on in relief of Reynier Gonzalez to start the eighth inning. Kevin Thomas had started, pitching four innings. Carlos Gonzalez relieved Thomas to start the fourth, giving up a run before R. Gonzalez took over, also giving up a run.

Down 2-1 in the seventh, Alex Castellanos reached on an infield single. Brett Lilley doubled (3) him home to tie the game at 2-apiece.

Freeman entered the game with two outs in the eighth, intentionally walking the Twins' Daniel Rams with a Twins' base runner already on second base, in order to create more force out options. A non-intentional walk to the next hitter, however, kept the situation "forceable," but not in the way the Cards would've preferred, by loading the bases. Freeman buckled down, though, striking out Angel Morales to get out of the jam.

Johnson City scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth with two outs.

After Curt Smith and Ivan Castro struck out swinging, Osvaldo Moreles drew a walk. The Cards sent in Jarred Bogany to pinch run, who advanced to second base on a past ball. Jairo Martinez came through with a single to center, Bogany scoring on the play.

Freeman ran into a little one-out trouble while closing, giving up back to back singles. He pitched his way clear, however, with some infield help before striking out the last Twins' batter.

Paul Cruz and Brett Lilley each doubled for the Cards.
