NoteCARDS v Padres 7/18/08

After 8 1/2 innings (Final)

Padres 7
Cardinals 11

Top of 9th:
[Jason Isringhausen relieved McClellan, pitching for the Cardinals]
After getting a ground out, Isringhausen gave up a walk, then got another ground out. Kouzmanoff struck out for the last out of the game.

Bottom of 8th:
[Heath Bell pitching for the Padres]
After a Ludwick strikeout, Pujols hit an 0-2 fastball up the middle for a basehit. Glaus walked on four straight pitches, creating yet another good scoring opportunity for the Cards to break the tie. The Padres helped keep the rally alive when Ankiel hit a ground ball to second baseman Edgar Gonzalez, the first baseman, Adrian Gonzalez venturing too far from first base, and the pitcher, Bell, getting a late start covering first base. Edgar Gonzalez could only put the ball in his pocket, Ankiel beating out the infield single.

Yadier Molina reached for an outide pitch, shooting it through the right side off of Edgar Gonzalez's glove and into right field, Pujols scoring and Glaus beating the throw to the plate with a slide to put the Cards up 9-7. The play advanced Ankiel to third, Molina hustling to second on the throw home.

Cesar Izturis hit a ground ball to Luis Rodriguez at short, Rodriguez firing home for a tag play on Ankiel at the plate. Ankiel did not slide, and there was a dispute over whether Hundley missed him completely with the tag. The out stood, however.

Chris Duncan pinch-hit, stroking a single to right, Molina scoring.
[Cla Meredith relieved Bell, pitching for the Padres]
Aaron Miles greeted Meredith with a basehit to left, Izturis scoring the tenth Cardinal run, Duncan advancing to second base. A past ball allowed both base runners to move up a base, putting Duncan on third and Miles on second.

Skip Schumaker walked to load the bases. Ludwick struck out on a low pitch, leaving the bases loaded, but the Cardinals pushed farther ahead at 11-7.

Top of 8th:
[Kyle McClellan relieved Villone, pitching for the Cardinals]
The Padres managed to get a two-out walk out of McClellan, but Molina threw him out at second on a steal attempt.

Bottom of 7th:
[Joe Thatcher relieved Mike Adams, pitching for the Padres]
Rick Ankiel hit a leadoff home run to tie the game at 7-7. Izturis tried to get something going again with a one-out single, stealing second, then advancing to third when Adam Kennedy was able to hit behind him.
[Heath Bell relieved Thatcher, pitching for the Padres]
Pinch-hitter Aaron Miles walked, giving the Cards men on the corners. Bell, however, ended the rally by striking out Schumaker.

Top of 7th:
[Russ Springer relieved Villone, pitching for the Cardinals]
A one-two-three inning for Springer.

Bottom of 6th:
[Mike Adams relieved Bryan Corey, pitching for the Padres]
With one out, Glaus had an at-bat with the bases loaded, Ryan at third, Schumaker at second, Pujols at first. Glaus struck out, the Cards leaving three on base.

Top of 6th:
[Brad Thompson pitching for the Cardinals]
When the Padres produced back-to-back singles and ended up with men on the corners with one out, La Russa went to Ron Villone to face Giles.
[Ron Villone relieved Thompson, pitching for the Cardinals]
Giles lined a basehit to right field, putting runners on first and second. Villone stayed in the game to face another lefthanded hitter, Adrian Gonzalez, who hit a hard grounder that Pujols had to venture far from first base to field, throwing to Izturis at second base for a force out, Izturis's relay back to Villone covering first base off the mark, Villone contorting and falling to the dirt to make the reception, somehow keeping his foot on the bag for the completion of the double play. The inning could've turned out disastrously, but the Cards got away down only one at 7-6.

Bottom of 5th:
[Bryan Corey relieved Maddux, pitching for the Padres]
The Cards wasted a Glaus leadoff single, no one able to move him along.

Top of 5th:
[Brad Thompson pitching for the Cardinals]
A one-two-three inning, Thompson threw a ground ball, then struck out the last two batters.

Bottom of 4th:
[Greg Maddux pitching for the Padres]
Ryan and Schumaker secured back-to-back singles with two outs, setting the table for the meat of the order. Ludwick would get the first crack at it, jumping on the first pitch and cranking it into the first row in left-center. The 3-run shot tied up the game at 6-6.

Top of the 4th:
[Braden Looper pitching for the Cardinals]
The Cards were bent on self-destruction in this inning, the bumbling beginning after Nick Hundley doubled. With Hundley on second and Maddux at the plate, a sac-bunt was in order. Maddux bunted, all right, and what transpired is something that may have never happened before; both Molina and Pujols committed throwing errors during the same play. First, Molina threw wildly to Glaus at third, the ball going wide and ending up in left field. Schumaker threw to home, not able to get Hundley scoring. Pujols cut the ball off, spinning and throwing off-line to second base trying to get Maddux going to second, the ball shooting into right-center. Ludwick back up the play, taking a shot a throwing out Maddux at third. Glaus had to block the throw, however, and Maddux was safe.

When the next batter, Jody Gerut, hit a two-run homer to right, manager Tony La Russa pulled Looper, giving the nod to Brad Thompson for what he hoped would be some long middle-inning relief, the Cards now down 6-3.
[Brad Thompson relieved Looper, pitching for the Cardinals]
Thompson worked out of the jam, striking out two and depending on Rick Ankiel to run down an Adrian Gonzalez fly ball at the warning track in center field.

Bottom of 3rd:
[Greg Maddux pitching for the Padres]
Ryan Ludwick led off with a single to left. Albert Pujols hit a hard ground ball through the box, Maddux unable to grab it to start a double play. Instead, the ball slowed up going into center field, Ludwick speeding up and making to third.

With one out and men on the corners, Troy Glaus hit a pop fly to left field, Chase Headley hustling in to make the play. Padres' pitcher Greg Maddux struck out Rick Ankiel on an off-speed pitch.

Yadier Molina grounded out to short, Maddux pitching his way out of a jam, the Cardinals stranding Ludwick and Pujols.

Top of 3rd:
[Braden Looper pitching for the Cardinals]
Looper hit Edgar Gonzalez with a pitch with one out. The pass gave the Padres an opportunity, which they took advantage of, Brian Giles singling to right, followed by singles from Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Kouzmanoff. By the time the hit parade, and the inning was over, the Padres had scored twice, tying the game at 3-apiece.

Bottom of 2nd:
[Greg Maddux pitching for the Padres]
The Cardinals played some small-ball Cesar Izturis walking, then advancing to second on a Looper sac-bunt. Izturis then stole third. Brendan Ryan drove him home with an infield ground out to short, the Cards getting their two-run lead back..

Top of 2nd:
[Braden Looper pitching for the Cardinals]
Braden Looper got a pitch up to Khalil Greene, who drove it to the opposite field, just over the outstretched arm of Ryan Ludwick and over the wall. The solo shot cut the Cards' lead in half, making it 2-1.

Bottom of 1st:
[Greg Maddux pitching for the Padres]
The Cards struck early, Albert Pujols driving a Maddux slider through the hole on the left side for a two-out basehit. Troy Glaus followed by scortching the first pitch he saw into the left-center field gap, a standup double with Pujols holding up at third. Rick Ankiel singled them both home to put the Cards on the board first, 2-0.

Top of 1st:
[Braden Looper pitching for the Cardinals]
The Padres threatened from the leadoff man, Jody Gerut, who swung at Looper's first pitch, getting a basehit to start the game. Edgar Gonzalez followed up with a single up the middle, and Looper spent the rest of inning, fighting to keep the Padres from scoring.
