Rookie lefthander Jaime Garcia has a rough start to his first major league start, the Padres' leadoff hitter, Scott Hairston, hitting a home run. The next hitter, Edgar Gonzalez, singles but Garcia settles a bit after that. The rookie uses up a lot of arm getting through the inning, the unofficial count in the neighborhood of 30 pitches.

Aaron Miles fails to make contact on a hit-and-run, Skip Schumaker thrown out at second base by 10 feet. Afterward, Miles got a basehit to center.

Ankiel hits a double into the right field corner, Miles scoring all the way from first base.
