NoteCARDS v Phillies ... after 8
Top of 8th: Phillies manager Charlie Manuel brought on Ryan Madson in relief. The Cards went down in order: Ryan Ludwick flying out to right, Albert Pujols grounding out to third, and Troy Glaus grounded out to second.
Bottom of 8th: Chris Perez took over on the hill for Springer, facing leadoff batter Pat Burrell.
Burrell drew a walk after a full count, and the Phillies threatened to get something started against the the rookie reliever. Eric Bruntlett pinch-ran for Burrell. Geoff Jenkins followed with a line drive single to Ludwick in right field, placing base runners on first and second with no outs. Pedro Feliz hit a long fly to left field, Bruntlett tagging up at second base and making it into third easily. This left the Cardinals with a chance for a double play to get out of the inning.
Chris Coste hit a one-hop shot down third base way, Troy Glaus sending the ball on its way around the horn for an inning-ending double play.
The Phillies continued to lead 4-1 after eight complete innings.
(This ends the NoteCards for today's game, unless the game goes into extra innings.)
