NoteCARDS v Pirates ... after 6 innings

Top of 4th: Ryan Ludwick provided the punch with a solo shot to left field, putting the Cards up 5-0.

Bottom of 4th: Trying to get some of the runs back, the Pirates loaded the bases on three consecutive basehits and one out; Xavier Nady, Adam LaRoche, and Jose Bautista recorded the hits. Lohse was now officially in a jam, but had a chance to either get out of it or minimize the damage with the pitcher, Zach Duke, at bat. Lohse struck him out, putting himself and the Cardinals defense an out away from escaping the bags-packed inning. Jack Wilson hit the ball hard, a drive to center, but Ankiel was positioned well and needed only drift back a few steps to make the inning-ending catch.

Top of 5th: Molina and Ankiel singled with one out to put more pressure on Duke. Both were left on base, however, when Izturis and Lohse could not reach or drive them in.

Bottom of 5th: Lohse wasn't ready to accept a prosperous inning, walking Ryan Doumit. Brendan Ryan, playing second base, made a nice running catch on a popup by Jason Bay near the first base line in shallow right field.

Top of 6th: Zach Duke continued on the mound, down 5-0 and trying to make sure the Cardinals didn't add to their lead. Duke handled Ryan and Skip Schumaker with some help from shortstop Jack Wilson and right fielder Xavier Nady. Duke proved he had settled down when he got Ludwick, who had homered earlier, to fly out to left fielder Jason Bay.

Bottom of 6th: Up 5-0, Lohse could afford to remain aggressive. Leadoff hitter Nady flew out to center, followed by a LaRoche ground out to Brendan Ryan at second base. Jose Bautista hit a ground ball single through the middle. Doug Mientkiewicz pinch-hit for Duke, but fanned.

The Cardinals remained up 5-0 at the end of six complete innings.
