Redbird Randoms ... NLC, one-two-three

The combination of a Cardinals loss, a Brewers win, and a Cubs loss leaves the Cubs in first place in the NL Central, four games ahead of the Brewers and 4.5 games ahead of the Cardinals.

The Brewers nudged their way into second place, switching places with the Cards, who slipped into third place.

The Cardinals lacked any semblance of an offense again, continuing to struggle at the plate, their pitching in the reasonable to good range.

The Brewers smelled a chance to make ground on the division-leading Cubs, doubtful they're very worried about the Cardinals at this point. Milwaukee's Dave Bush marked a new career high with 13 strikeouts, giving up one run in the first inning.

After the initial Rockies' run, however, it was all "brewing up a win," Bush's teammates pounding the Rox for 11 runs on 12 hits.

The Cubs got a surprise from the Reds at Wrigley Field, going down 12-7. The Reds hit seven home runs in the "Friendly Confines."
