Springfield Cardinals' Mura wins, Carpenter appears, Salas closes

SPRINGFIELD, MO--The Double-A Cardinals took Hammons Field with a former parent-club ace tonight. Chris Carpenter started the game as a scheduled rehab assignment, Kyle Mura (3-1) notching the win, and Fernando Salas closing as the Springfield Cardinals claimed a 4-1 victory over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals.

Carpenter pitched four full innings. The breakdown of his work can be reveiwed here in a new window.

While the four innings of Carpenter's work were a boon to the AA-squad, the rest of the game still had to pitched and hit for by the minor league affiliate's regular crew.

Mura took over for Carpenter to start the fifth, giving up the only Naturals run on a bunt play in the sixth inning. Mura gave up one run (earned) on three hits, giving up three walks and striking out four.

The Cardinals answered the Naturals' run on an Allen Craig solo home run (18).

Tyler Greene added a solo shot of his own in the Cards' eighth, his 16th on the season.

Jon Jay then started a rally with a single, advancing to third when Craig laid on more power, doubling (24) to left field. Andrew Brown struck out, but Cody Haerther got a run home on an infielder's choice, Jay scoring and Craig moving over to third. Isa Garcia moved Craig in for the Cards' fourth run with a sacrifice fly.

Salas came out of bullpen to close. One Natural reached on a Craig fielding error, but Salas struck out the next hitter, then retired the next two hitters on fly balls to Casey Rowlett in right field.

Craig went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, and two runs scored.

Greene went 2-for-4 with a home run and a run scored.

Rowlett went 1-for-3 with a double.

Jay went 1-for-4 and scored a run.

Haerther went 1-for-4.
