Redbird Randoms...9/12/08 Thompson, Hurrican Ike, Molina, Pujols, Miles

On-deck: The Cardinals start a nine-game road trip tonight in Pittsburgh, playing the first game of a three-game set with the Pirates at PNC Park. Game time is 6:05 p.m. CT.

Probables: STL-Brad Thompson RHP (5-2, 4.61) vs. PIT-Paul Maholm LHP (8-8, 3.74)

Birds' Perch: The Cards remain in fourth place in the NL Central, the Astros winning last night and pulling ahead by a full game, now 1.5 games ahead of the Cards in third. The Cards are 4.5 games behind the second place (and Wild Card leading) Brewers, and 10.0 games behind the first place Cubs.

Pujols milestone: Albert Pujols collected his 100th RBI in last night's loss to the Cubs.

Miles where?: Utility fielder (not just Utility infielder, now) Aaron Miles started in left field last night, but had no balls hit to him.

Molina recovers: Catcher Yadier Molina will be out a few more games while his severely bruised leg mends. The injury resulted from a home plate collision with the Cubs' Ted Lilly.

Ike demands respect: Hurricane Ike is expected to make landfall in the Houston area soon, causing MLB to postpone the start of the Cubs/Astros series. It is yet to be determined whether the teams will attempt a double-header on Sunday with a single game on Monday (an off day for both clubs) or whether the entire series will be moved to another MLB ball park. Likely candidates are Atlanta and Florida.

Redbirds extended: The Cardinals have agreed to a four-year contract that would keep Memphis as the Class AAA affiliate team.

Batavia in playoffs: Low-A affiliate Batavia Muckdogs are in the finals of the New York Penn League.
