STLtoday - Cards claim lefthanded reliever

STLtoday - Cards claim lefthanded reliever: "During organizational meetings earlier this month manager Tony La Russa and his staff made clear the need for a specialist to control lefthanded hitters. The Cardinals struggled in such situations last season as lefthanders Ron Villone and Randy Flores struggled for consistency and specialist Tyler Johnson missed the entire year with shoulder problems that eventually required surgery."

... The Cards take a shot at a lefty specialist to possibly make up where Villone and Flores fell short. Manning does create a situtation, however, whereby the Cards have to notch Manning into the 40-man roster, cutting themselves off from one slot of a possible move later on. Manning has control issues, which doesn't make him much different than the current Cards' problematic relief staff. Risk is risk, though, and we can hazard a guess that Dave Duncan sees in Manning someone who could be assisted and made into a good aquisition. Either that or he once played outfield for an inning in pee-wee ball.
