Redbirds clip Orangebirds with 'Jay' and 'Robin'son

The Cardinals' Shane Robinson created some ninth inning heroics Sunday during a 4-all game with the Orioles by beating out an infield single, then stealing second base, then scoring when teammate Jon Jay swatted him home with a drive down the left field line.

Unfortunately for Jay, and four other Redbirds, their stay with the major league club ended Sunday as well.

Jay, Tyler Greene, Brian Anderson, Blake Hawksworth, and Fernando Salas all packed out, the Cards' roster now down to 33.

The battle for what is expected to be the last bullpen spot for RHP continues. The lefthanded chores have been all but sown up by Trevor Miller and Dennys Reyes.

The competition at third base got a bit thinner with the departure of T. Greene, however, the recall of David Freese had mixed things up at the hot corner once more. Mather has been the steady third baseman, but his bat had cooled off of late, creating more opportunity for Freese, Ryan, and Thurston to compete, let alone the chance to become the utility man.

Chris Carpenter takes the hill Monday versus the Nats at Roger Dean Stadium. Carp has not given up a run this spring.

There are 14 days remaining until opening day.
