Windy City matchups

The Cardinals begin a four-game set with the Cubs on the north side of Chicago today.

Wrigley Field is the setting, and Thursday afternoon's matchup will feature the Cardinals' Adam Wainwright (1-0, 1.74) vs. the Cubs' Sean Marshall (0-0, 0.00). This game may well set the tone for the weekend. Both squads know momentum is important, but also know that each game is its own contest.

The biggest shift in the probable matchups came when Cards' manager Tony La Russa had to deal with an injury to former ace Chris Carpenter. Carp went on the DL, 15 days. However, his rib cage injury could put him on the sidelines for anywhere from four to eight weeks.

La Russa sent Brad Thompson down to Triple-A Memphis while calling up Chris Perez and Mitchell Boggs. But the pitcher TLR will call up to start Friday's contest in Wrigley Field will be P.J. Walters (0-0, ---), who will face the Cubs' Carlos Zambrano (1-0, 3.00), if the Cubs stick with their rotation schedule.

The Walters' start on Friday will push Kyle Lohse (2-0, 1.12) to a Saturday start versus the Cubs' Ryan Dempster (1-0, 4.50). This will give Lohse on extra day's rest.

Also getting an extra day's rest will be the Cards' slated Sunday starter, Todd Wellemeyer (1-1, 4.50), who would then be matched up against the Cubs' Ted Lilly (2-0, 3.86).
