Taxing hurlers a tradeoff

In the 4-3 loss to the Astros on Saturday, what comes to mind is simply a reminder that good defense is such a huge part of successful baseball. Defense helps when your offense isn't.

The bad effect is that poor defense taxes the hell out of any pitching staff.

Make no mistake, the Cards had a great pitching staff, reduced by injury to the best second-tier pitching staff.

One hot bat at a time won't be enough in the Bigs.

And remember it's not totally a player's fault they aren't pulling their weight on defense. They know they are paid by today's standards of hit first-field second. The game is out of balance; the Cardinals are a prime example.

The good news; all of the above can change.
