Cards pitchers and catchers get to work at Spring Training

The Cardinals' core of battery mates, the pitchers and catchers, have reported to Spring Training at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida.

The biggest news is the who is not there: Chris Carpenter. Carpenter recently announced at a press conference he will not be going to spring training, and that 2013 is pretty much out of the question to due reoccurring shoulder injuries.

Carpenter hold out hope, however, that he may yet return to the mound for the Redbirds, although with the full knowledge that such an occurrence would not be possible until the 2014 season at the earliest. Carpenter also admits he may be finished with baseball. He just doesn't have any way of knowing that for sure at this point.

As for those at Spring Training, the biggest news is the battle from the get-go for a last spot in the starting rotation. At least for the fans, players, and coach's sakes, respectively, the competitors are obvious.

Joe Kelly, Trevor Rosenthal, and Shelby Miller will vie for that fifth spot.

Lance Lynn, is look good for the fourth spot, in camp and down forty pounds from last season.

Otherwise, as for early arrivals, Matt Carpenter is getting good reviews from infield coach, Jose Oquendo, who feels Carpenter is ahead of Schumacher already. (Schumacher is no longer on the Cardinals.) A battle for second base is shaping up between Carpenter and Daniel Descalso. Carpenter would be favored for his bat, and the position is his for the taking if he can manage the glove side of things, Descalso able to throw some good leather.
