Cards edge Royals in makeup

ST. LOUIS--John Lackey picked up win number nine (against five losses), going seven innings versus the Kansas City Royals, as the St. Louis Cardinals held on in the last inning for a 4-3 win.

The Royals jumped out to a two-run lead in the top of first, the Cardinals answering in the second and third innings, respectively. Both Randal Grichuk and Matt Carpenter hit two-run homers, in the second and third innings, respectively.

Lackey was relieved by Randy Choate, then Seth Maness. Choate did not record an out, but Maness took care of the eighth and earned a hold. Closer Trevor Rosenthal permitted one ninth inning run, but the Cardinals defense held out for the one-run victory.

Thursday game versus the Royals was a makeup from an earlier season rainout, which got tacked on to the front end of a ten-game home stand at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals take on the Atlanta Braves over the weekend in a three-game series that begins Friday.
