Cards edge defending WS Champs Giants

ST. LOUIS--In the first game of a three-game series with the defending World Series Champion San Franscisco Giants, the St.Louis Cardinals won, 2-1 at Busch Stadium.

Cardinals' starter, Michael Wacha pitched 7 innings to a no decision with the scored tied at one apiece.

St. Louis manager Mike Matheny called Kevin Siegrist (4-0) from the bullpen for the eighth, when he struck out one and allowed no runs. The Cardinals scored in the bottom of the frame, making Siegrist the eventual game winning pitcher.

Trevor Rosenthal cleared the ninth inning, striking out one and earning his 37th save of the season.

Stephen Piscotty continued to swing a hot bat, going 2-for-4 with a triple.

Yadier Molina hit a solo home run to left field in the fourth, giving the Redbirds a 1-0 lead.

The Giants tied the game in the top of the sixth inning, Matt Duffy scoring off a Brandon Crawford double to center field.

Rookie Piscotty provided late inning heroics when he tripled in the bottom of the eighth, scoring the game-winning run when Mark Reynolds reached first base on a fielder's choice.

The Cardinals continue their series with the Giants Tuesday at Busch Stadium.
